It looks like DAF Trucks almost have an electric CF truck ready for market.  They will be starting field trials in the Netherlands this year on a 6×2 CF fitted with a waste management body. These aren’t the first electric DAF trucks to go out on trial, there are a number of electric CF tractor units that have been on field tests for more than a year now.  These are being used in a wide range of applications, including container works and supermarket distribution.

Perfect for Rubbish

DAF believe that their electric rigid is suited to urban short-distance distribution and ideal for waste collection.  Not only is the truck emission free at the exhaust pipe, (which it doesn’t have either) it is extremely quiet – something anyone living in a city can appreciate when the refuse trucks arrive at 4am!To allow for the additional weight of the batteries, the electric CF’s gross vehicle weight is 28 tons – an extra 2 tonnes on top of the standard 6×2 driven by a diesel engine. Most refuse vehicles head back to the dump on a regular basis. It is believed that the time they spend there means that the 170 kWh electric  DAF CF vehicles can be recharged to 80% in just thirty minutes, giving them enough power to carry out the next collection round.
