Iveco has revealed the next stage in the electrification of their heavy truck range with the launch of the new S-eWay rigid at the IAA show in Germany. The truck is a development of the S-eWay tractor unit, which shares the e-born platform, the S-eWay Rigid incorporates the results of previous developments and MY24 cab innovations, from Human Machine Interface to driver ergonomics.

Although the diesel powered S-Way has made no great inroads into the UK market, the rigid version is popular in continental Europe and especially in Italy. Bodybuilders involvement in the project makes the S-eWay perfect for easy body fitting and adaptations. In this way, even tough applications can be satisfied. Operators can choose from 4×2, or 6×2 versions, suspension types, cab types and wheelbases to create the vehicle for their requirements. The Iveco S-eWay can also be used for towing trailers up to 44t GCW.

“With the S-eWay Rigid we are completing our S-eWay range, expanding our offering of zero-carbon solutions to give our customers the freedom to choose the one that best suits them. This new vehicle provides an answer to our loyal customers in the rigid segment, who look to Iveco for the robustness, performance and versatility of our vehicles and the capillarity and expertise of our network. The S-eWay Rigid capitalises on our electro-mobility know-how and on the Model Year 24 innovations to offer them a zero-emission solution that delivers on all these demands” said Luca Sra, President Truck Business Unit, Iveco Group.

Iveco S-eWay Rigid can be already ordered across Europe, with deliveries starting from the second half of next year.

Versatile and flexible Battery System

The new battery system features a choice of 4, 5 or 7 Microvast Batteries of 70kWh each giving totals of 280kWh, 350kWh or 490kWh. This flexibility means that customers only need to specify the right amount of battery for their daily needs. The batteries can be configured in positions required by bodybuilding with even the possibility to leave the Chassis Right Hand Side free for applications such as lateral loading refuse collectors. They can also be moved rearwards leaving space for equipment such as stabiliser legs immediately behind the front wheels.

When fitted with 7 batteries and 490kWh of energy on board, the range of the vehicle can be up to 400km. This will meet the needs of most regional and urban applications. DC Fast Charging up to an impressive 350kW is via a CCS type 2 connector on the left-hand side of the vehicle and a charge of less than 45 min during the driver’s rest break can add a further 200km range. Charging parameters can be configured from the cluster to select a target state of charge – ideal if only a small amount of energy is required to complete the day’s work and if the external charge price is much higher than the depot. Charging Current limiting can also be selected to slow down the charging rate for improved battery life.

Proven motor from the S-eWay family

The Iveco S-eWay Rigid powered by a dual-motor eAxle by FPT Industrial, Iveco’s sister Brand specialised in advanced powertrain technologies, producing a market leading 480kW continuous power and 1,800Nm of torque. Not only does the eAxle grant best-in-class dynamic performance, but its compact design allows space for body and equipment along the chassis without the encumbrance of an e motor and drive shaft.

Choice of PTOs

Urban and regional applications have extensive requirements for Power Take Offs and the Iveco S-eWay offers an impressive total of 3 types of PTO.

For Low Voltage requirements such as tail lifts, there is a LV PTO. For applications that use high voltage electrical power, there is a HV ePTO capable of providing up to 20 kW of continuous power. This is ideal for refrigerated and chilled distribution for example. For the applications that require mechanical or hydraulic power, the Mech ePTO can provide up to 60 kW of continuous power either mechanically or via a hydraulic pump drive. This is perfect for applications such as refuse collection, skip and hookloaders, cranes and tippers. The Mech ePTO can also be mounted in 3 different locations to suit the application requirements demonstrating the benefits of working with bodybuilders to ensure that all configurations can be achieved.

Optimum Energy Management

Energy management is key to successful electro mobility and the Iveco S-eWay Rigid brings the experience of Iveco battery electric technology and takes it to new heights. There are Seven regenerative braking drive modes which help maximise efficiency transforming kinetic energy to electrical energy whilst still allowing the driver full control over the vehicle braking dynamics.

The driver or the fleet operator can select driving modes either in the vehicle or remotely, and selecting Eco Mode will ensure the best range possible. GPS predictive drive combines ePredictive Cruise Control with Smart Routing that can even plan recharging stops if required.

Comfort and a Driver Experience

Operators have the choice of the spacious AS full width cab for longer distance work or the more compact AT cab when a sleeper area is still required. For those applications where bunks are not needed, the AD day cab is ideal.

Driver centricity is ensured with a noise and vibration free drive. A large and intuitive 10-inch digital driver’s display has been designed to show all the information that the driver needs to get the best results from the Iveco S-eWay Rigid. Controls are conveniently to hand so that functions are reachable without taking your hands off the steering wheel.

The 10-inch infotainment display provides a rich user interface with a heavy truck specific functionalities such as the navigation system which incorporates Smart Routing and the integrated Iveco Driver Pal with Amazon Alexa built-in for voice-driven interaction. The infotainment also hosts a Third-Party App Integration, which allows bodybuilders and customers to interact with body functionalities through vehicle’s connectivity.

LED headlamps are standard ensuring the best visibility for nighttime use. ADAS level 2 systems of Highway assist and ACC with stop and go are available for the driver’s comfort and safety along with a complete system of GSR features.
