Lanarkshire-based Stuart Nicol Transport has reinforced its long-standing partnership with Volvo Trucks by ordering four FH Aero tractor units, each configured to meet specific operational requirements. The newly commissioned vehicles feature customised axle configurations, varying power outputs, different cab sizes, and bespoke interior specifications, ensuring an optimal balance between efficiency and driver comfort
Tailored Specifications for Enhanced Performance
The fleet, supplied by Jordan Stokes, Transport Solutions Executive at Volvo Truck and Bus North & Scotland, includes three Globetrotter XL cabs and one top-tier Globetrotter XXL model. Advanced features such as turbo compound technology, full air suspension, and lightweight pusher, twin tag, and tag axles ensure the trucks are equipped to handle a range of heavy-duty transport needs.
The first unit to arrive, a Volvo FH Aero 460 Globetrotter XL 6×2 tractor unit with I-Save technology, is already in operation. Expected to cover 300,000 kilometres annually, it will run up to seven days a week, demonstrating its robust endurance in long-haul applications.

Optimised Efficiency and Cutting-Edge Technology
Commenting on the latest addition, Stuart Nicol, owner of the company, expressed enthusiasm about the vehicle’s initial performance:
“When the FH Aero launched, we didn’t hesitate – and we’re very glad we didn’t! The fuel performance out of the box has been mightily impressive, with our first FH Aero already yielding one mile per gallon more than the vehicle it replaced. To think that as the trucks bed in we could see even better results is very promising.”
Nicol also highlighted the company’s continued confidence in Volvo Trucks:
“We have a long and healthy relationship with Volvo, and it’s one that we really value. The reliability of its trucks, combined with its product innovation, gives us the confidence to keep building on that partnership.”
Each of Stuart Nicol Transport’s Volvo FH Aero models is powered by Euro-6 compliant D13 Step E engines. Alongside the turbo compound 460hp version, the firm has also opted for one 540hp and two 500hp standard powertrain models. All four vehicles are equipped with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox, delivering seamless gear changes and smooth acceleration.
Prioritising Driver Comfort and Visibility
Ensuring driver satisfaction remains a key focus, with comfort maximised across all models. The Drive+ package enhances cabin ergonomics with leather upholstery, dual armrests, an adjustable steering wheel with neck tilt, and fully electronic air conditioning featuring a carbon filter and air quality sensors.
Volvo’s Camera Monitoring System (CMS) replaces conventional mirrors, significantly expanding the driver’s field of view. The system features auto-panning functionality, which tracks trailer movements during turns, improving situational awareness. CMS also excels in low-light, rainy conditions, direct sunlight, and when driving through tunnels, offering a more consistent view than traditional mirrors.
Nicol praised the new system’s effectiveness:
“Making sure our drivers are comfortable and well looked after is a big priority for us, and the FH Aero has definitely delivered on that front. There was a bit of an adjustment at first in moving away from traditional mirrors, but they have adapted quickly and now really appreciate the improved visibility and reduced blind spots.”
Fleet Expansion and Long-Term Deployment
The new trucks will integrate into Stuart Nicol Transport’s 70-strong commercial vehicle fleet, half of which are Volvo models. The remaining three FH Aero units are scheduled for delivery in 2025, with all four vehicles anticipated to remain in service for at least six years.
Since its founding in 2004 with just a single truck, Stuart Nicol Transport has grown into a well-established operator, providing general haulage, collections, and overnight trunking services across the UK.
