8×4 trucks are more commonly known as ‘Eight Wheelers’. They have four axles with two of the axles used to drive the truck. Typically used for on/off road applications where the truck spends a lot of time on the roads, but will also need to access sites where the terrain is not perfect. Examples or these are building sites, roadworks and quarries. The 8×4 trucks are typically fitted with tipper bodies, although many hookloaders are in the same specification.
It is normal that the two non-drive axles both steer the truck, but we are seeing an increase in the use of a ‘Tridem’ configuration. This is where the truck has one steer axle at the front, then two drive axles and a final steer axle at the back of the truck. In terms of weight carrying ability, an 8×4 truck has a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 32 tonnes. This is the combined weight of the truck and the load. These trucks usually work in payload sensitive operations, such as waste, bulk feeds or grain, so, the lighter the truck and body the better – as long as it can stand up to the battering these trucks are typically exposed to.
