The MoD regularly sells of their military trucks that are end the end of their active service. There are all types of trucks that fall into this category – although they are usually dropside trucks that can carry troops or goods. From 2005, the MoD bought MAN trucks (A deal smoothed after the acquisition of ERF by MAN) – the MAN HS and SX in particular, whereas beforehand DAF GS was the preferred truck of choice as it arose from the ashes of Leyland trucks. Earlier examples still for sale in the vintage military market include Bedford TM, MT and MK. The Leyand (DAF) GS started service in 1990 and finished service in 2014, but some were kept on and are still making their way onto the used truck market.
Often the ex-army trucks are sent to export markets – their rugged, go anywhere designs are well suited to countries whose roads are in poor condition and where weather conditions can make them worse still. Since the ex-army trucks, such as tankers, for example have travelled relatively few miles on the road and have been maintained to within an inch of their lives, these trucks should have plenty more life left in them. Since the vehicles are typically older, it means that the technology is more straightforward and easier to repair than today’s modern trucks – meaning also that they are more flexible regarding the quality of the fuel used.
Other buyers are looking to convert an ex-military truck into a vehicle for expeditions – ‘The Grand Tour’! The reasons are similar to why the export markets love these trucks – they should be reliable, easy to fix and can drive anywhere – plus they are large enough to sleep in.
As far as the ex military Land Rovers and other lighter 4×4 vehicles are concerned, they are also purchased by enthusiasts in the UK – some for conversion to civilian use – others for use on site – think paintballing and you won’t be far wrong.
