DAF are the UK’s runaway market leader. As you would expect therefore, DAF tractor units are extremely popular on the UK’s used truck market. The new generation XG and XG+ is the DAF range of tractor units to have for long distance work – the recently redesigned and aerodynamic cabs make it the premium choice of tractor unit. The successful XF model continues but sharing the new generation cab with the XG, albeit in slightly smaller, everyday form, whilst the practical DAF CF Tractor unit is typically used for more local operations – although this cab is also available as a Space Cab so should not be dismissed out of hand – think of the extra payload available! Both models can be specified as 4×2, 6×2 or 6×4 tractor units, although by far and away the most common on the UK’s roads and in Truckpages for sale is the 6×2 version.
If you are hoping to enter into any of the low emission zones now or in the near future, then you need to consider buying DAF tractor units made after 2013. These not the XF105 and CF85 models, but the versions distinguishable by the larger headlights and the more simple model descriptions, for example XF460 (note the missing ‘105’).
These later models are all at Euro 6.
It is worth explaining the chassis layouts available and the extra terms given by DAF for their tractor unit chassis. Read more below.
There are still plenty of DAF XF105 tractor units available for sale – remember none of these are at the Euro 6 emissions standards so beware if buying these for operation near a low emission zone like the ULEZ.
If you are after a Euro 6 DAF tractor unit then forget the XF105 – it has to be a post 2013 model now called just ‘XF’. Most popular amongst these is the XF510 – recently updated to the XF530 with the earlier, pre 2018 model fleet option being the XF460.
The CF Tractor unit was better known as the CF85 until 2014 where, like the XF, it lost a few numbers and now is simply known as the CF followed by the power output. The most popular of these Euro 6 versions are the CF440 of the CF85.410 in old money.
Appearing on the used market in larger numbers are DAF tractor units with the new generation XG, XG+ and XF cabs that have been designed according to the revised regulations on cab sizes. This means larger cabs as long as the additional length benefits the aerodynamic performance of the tractor units. These cabs really broke new ground when launched and have proved highly successful in terms of sales numbers and improved fuel consumption. The new DAF XG or XF tractor unit should be your choice of second hand tractor unit if you can find on e and afford one!
So, we know that a DAF XF460 is a 460 horsepower DAF truck with an XF cab. Most of these types of trucks were sold as tractor units – so why are there always more letters involved when advertised by a (knowledgeable) DAF dealer?
It’s all about the axle configuration.
Here goes an explanation:
Not immediately obvious from the outside, but this week's front cover truck will suit the dye-in-the-wool manual transmission fans. Most tractor units in today's market use automated transmissions, but the 2020 DAF XF480 Super Space Cab High Roof Sleeper is fitted with a 16 speed manual and is one of the latest pre-new generation DAFs we have seen on the market recently. A midlift configuration, it has a FORS camera system and rear LED lights. It can be bought from Ford & Slater - check out their full advert on page 13 inside. Click to Read Page Turn Magazine Click…
German magazine Truck & Trailer Welt Awards Driver & Cost Prizes to New XF It seems the new XF and XG cab design is really paying off for DAF, as it appears to be winning from both the drivers’ and the operators’ perspectives. The German truck magazines like a side by side test – as do the winners of the tests. This time it was the multi-brand ‘European Truck Challenge’ (ETC) test organized by the German trade magazine Truck & Trailer Welt. In the tests the XF 450 outperformed the competition in terms of lowest operating costs and won the…
So, you have almost taken the plunge. After years of sitting in someone else’s truck being paid a wage, you fancy the opportunity that financial pressure brings with it and investing in your own truck and becoming an owner driver with your very own tractor unit. There are plenty of jobs to confirm before even thinking about which tractor unit to buy. Firstly, you need to find the contract that will provide you with the work, as the best tractor unit in the world is useless if there is no work for it to do. You need to get finance…
Even if all other factors were equal, it makes sense to buy a product that has been assembled locally. So, when the new DAF XG came out top on bulk powder product haulier, Arclid Transport’s whole life cost analysis, the fact they are built in Lancashire was the icing on the cake. The company has just switched back to the DAF brand with its recent intake of three DAF XG 480 tractor units with DAF’s ‘FTP’ lightweight mid-lift axle configuration. Two of the units go onto Arclid’s powder fleet to support sister company, Bathgate, with the remainder joining the company’s…
DAF Trucks have managed to change from being a minority supplier of trucks to Freeland Freight to their majority supplier in recent years. To further strengthen this relationship, the company has bought four new DAF XG 530 6x2 tractor units (with ‘FTG’ axle configuration) for use on its long-haul work across the UK. The ‘Granite City’ operator is yet to commission the trucks pending post-delivery modifications, though the XGs are already impressing company director, Richard Freeland, and his drivers. Since 1972, Freeland Freight has offered a mix of general haulage services, with business from Aberdeen’s historic oil, gas and petroleum…
