Volvo is one of the most popular chassis manufacturers for crane truck conversion in the UK. Truck buyers tend to opt for a premium truck maker when deciding on the vehicle for their crane conversion. Since the cranes are so expensive to buy and install, installers and operators alike prefer to use a chassis like a Volvo or Scania for the larger crane installations, whilst DAF will get the majority of the smaller jobs. Expect to see the vehicles configured with an 8×2 axle layout with a heavy duty, nine tonne front axle capable of managing the extra weight of the crane. These are increasingly used as a tridem format when mounting the crane to the rear of the truck helpful if towing a trailer that needs to be unloaded as well.

The crane capacity is a short Lift of 7250kg at 4.35m / 15985lb at 14'3"…
If you are investing in specifying and building an expensive crane truck it is important to make sure that the chassis is the right specification and comes from a premium brand. O’Carroll Haulage & Crane Hire has taken no chances with the delivery of their new Volvo FH420 8x2 drawbar rigid, which joins an almost exclusively Volvo fleet. Supplied by Michael Walsh, Sales Executive at McCarthy Commercials, the new FH is powered by Volvo’s D13K engine, delivering up to 420 hp and 2,100 Nm of…
Renewable energy supplier Think Hire has put its first ever truck on the road – taking delivery of a new crane-equipped Volvo FH 460 8x2 rear-steer rigid to help the business keep pace with growing demand. Going green is the name of the game for large corporates today. Environmental impact plus the decluttering of dashboards were the main motivators for Travis Perkins to place a significant order for Volvo FM 26 tonners to join the 1,500+ fleet. They will operate in a mix of Travis Perkins and Keyline Civils Specialist liveries, providing building materials to construction customers nationwide. The multi-million-pound investment will see approximately 170 Volvo FM 330 6x2 rear-steer rigids delivered into service over two years – with 85 new FMs confirmed for this year; to be followed by around 85 more in 2023. It…
The range of options available from truck manufacturers today is bewildering – there seems to be absolutely something to suit every application. For example, who would have thought that you could order a really short wheelbase, 18-tonne truck with an extra high chassis for improved ground clearance? Well, that’s exactly what a Volvo Truck customer has specified for their new crane truck for building supplies delivery in rural Wales. Lliw Building Supplies has taken delivery of a new Volvo FL 250 4x2 rigid equipped with rear mounted crane, continuing its long relationship with the manufacturer. The Pontardawe-based business has been…
