You’ll always find plenty of used Econics for sale at Truckpages – both those that can enter the ULEZ and older, non-Euro 6 models suitable for less congested environments. The Econic is famous for being a rubbish truck. That doesn’t mean it’s no good – on the contrary – it just means that it has historically been sold for refuse collection duties. The low entry cab and excellent five star all round vision standard sets it out from most other models of truck (perhaps the Dennis Elite aside). We are seeing increasing numbers of Econics fitted with different bodies – especially scaffold bodies and mixers, as they spend most of their lives inside urban environments where direct vision of pedestrians and cyclists is all important. With the Econic you get the quality build and extensive R&D investment that comes from buying the three pointed star.

Available as a 4×2, 6×2 or 8×2 the Econic is available with gross vehicle weights of 18, 26 or 32 tonnes. Revised models were introduced in 2006 for Euro 4/5, 2008 for EEV, 2014 for Euro 6, (see detailed timeline below).

Mercedes Econic History

The Econic was originally launched way back in 1998 and sold as many as 8,000 units in its first ten years.

Econic1 — The “DirectVision cab” of the Econic makes it possible to enjoy an excellent all-round view of the surrounding traffic thanks to the deep, panoramic windscreen and full-height, glazed folding side door as well as the lower seating position of the driver. The Mercedes-Benz Econic was therefore honoured with a five-star rating as part of London’s “DirectVision Standards” guideline.

2004: Introduction of 8×4 Econic
2005: 5,000th Econic produced
2006: Major revisions including Euro 4, rear axle, larger mirrors & dashboar
2008: Engines available at Euro 5: OM906LA for 238 and 286HP or the larger OM926LA for 326HP all going through an Allison 6 speed automatic transmission.
2009: More than 1,500 Econics sold in a year
2010: EEV, seat belts, load measuring, raising/lowering and ASR as standard
2011: 10,000th Econic delivered
2013: Euro 6 Econic launched
2014: New Econic Natural gas version launched
2015: From March Active Brake Assist & Lane Keeping Assist added as standard
