The V8-powered R580 has been around for some while, only recently receiving an upgrade to the 590hp version in 2020. The 580 uses Scania’s infamous 16-litre V8 engine and is the sensible power output to choose. A lower powered 520 version of the V8 was available (now the 530) but why bother when you could have the lighter 13-litre version with more power? Of course, the mighty 16-litre V8 goes right up to 760 (770) horsepower, but is this really necessary on the UK’s roads given the lack of extreme mountainous terrain? Only for a heavy haulage application perhaps.
Our verdict? If you are looking for the unique sound of the engine then the R580 is the right choice of used R-Series Scania.
