The trucks on these pages are all 18 tonners – that is to say 4×2 rigids with a variety of body types. 18,000kgs (18 tonnes) is the maximum gross vehicle weight possible using a two-axle truck. This is because the rear, drive axle can take a maximum of 10 tonnes and the front, steer axle 8 tonnes. For operators requiring greater payloads from a rigid truck can increase this through the addition of an extra axle, (giving a 6×2 configuration) which can add a further 8 tonnes payload. Operating at less than 26 and more than 18 tonnes GVW is less efficient, so trucks running at 22 tonnes, for example, are very rare. Use the filter to select a particular make or model of 18-tonner from our listings.
these trucks are very popular for distribution operations. They are lighter and easier to manoeuvre than a 26 tonner as there is less ribber in contact with the ground when turning.
Modern 18 tonners handle with a car-like feel when sitting behind the wheel – despite the fact that is could be fitted with a 30ft body of any description.
So, expect to see many 18-tonne box vans and 18 tonne curtainsiders in the Truckpages listings. You will find fewer examples of 18 tonne tippers, as operators prefer running a minimum of a 6×4 at 26 tonnes, but ideally an 8×4 at 32 tonnes GVW.

The good news is that there is no such thing as a bad 18 tonne truck these days. This means that the chances of you buying a howler are reduced. That’s not to say that all 18 tonners are equal. What is an 18 Tonner? Let’s start with the basics. An 18 tonne truck does not mean that it can carry 18 tonnes, this weight denomination is the truck’s Gross Vehicle Weight (G.V.W.) which is the maximum permissible legal weight for the truck, body driver, load, fuel combined. When fitted with a simple flat or curtainside body, an 18 tonner…
Lancashire-based waste management specialist Gillett Environmental has commissioned the first two trucks from a clutch of six Mercedes-Benz skiploaders ordered to support its ambitious growth strategy. The company operates on a national basis but trades locally as Lytham St Annes Skip Hire. Supplied by Ciceley Commercials, its latest Arocs 18-tonners all represent extensions to a fleet in which Mercedes-Benz was already the dominant brand. This, however, is the first time that Gillett Environmental has sourced vehicles from a member of the manufacturer’s franchised network. Having previously used an independent garage for servicing, it will also be relying for the first…
