Used 26 Tonne Trucks: – The 26-tonne truck is popular format in the UK. For this reason, there are always plenty of 6×2 rigid 26 tonners for sale @Truckpages. Remember however, that some advertisers do not enter the vehicle weight into their listings if that is the case then they won’t appear here. If you can’t find what you are looking for on these pages, try a search for a 6×2 truck and choose the body type you are interested in. Why Buy a 26 Tonne Truck? Using a 26-tonne truck is a great compromise between excellent payload and manoeuvrability. A typical 26 tonner will weigh in at between 7.5 and 8 tonnes unladen weight, compared to an 18 tonner which is only some 400-500 kgs lighter. This means a whopping 7.5 tonnes additional payload, assuming similar bodies. In reality the 26 tonner will have a longer body, so a realistic additional 7 tonnes could be possible on a 26 vs 18 tonne truck.
More About 26 Tonne Trucks
Following this theory, you could load even more onto an 8×2 or 8×4 truck with a 32,000kg gross vehicle weight. This is the case, but you would need to be carrying heavy cargo because the body length cannot get much greater for general distribution work. These types of trucks are normally used when a crane is fitted to the truck which takes up a lot of payload potential or as a bulk tipper or hookloader.
The downside of a 26 tonne truck compared to an 18 tonner is the ease of manoeuvrability – they tend to be longer and with more rubber on the road they are harder to turn when delivering.
To Lift or not to Lift Axle?
Most 26 tonne rigid trucks are fitted with lift axles, (or lift and steer). This means that, when the truck is not fully laden, the additional axle is lifted from the ground, saving tyre wear and fuel and making the vehicle easier to turn.
The lift axle could be behind the drive axle (rear lift) or in front of the drive axle, (midlift) and could help the truck by steering – or simply fixed.
What about a Drawbar?
Fit a higher-powered engine into a 26-tonne truck, a connector plus electrics/air at the rear and you have a typical drawbar combination that is favoured on the continent. These turn the 26 tonner into a 40 tonne Gross Train Weight vehicle.
