Remember that buying your next used truck through a used truck dealer gives you additional protection compared to buying at auction. A truck dealer has a reputation to look after and should make best efforts to describe the truck for sale in the first instance, but also to make sure that it is fit for purpose and roadworthy. A truck buyer should have recourse against any dealer who has knowingly misled them about the condition of the vehicle.
A truck dealer will see lots of truck operators over the years and will have learnt the best type of truck suited to the duty cycle that you have in mind for the truck. It is therefore worth asking them for some advice – you don’t want to buy a truck that won’t be able to carry out the work that you have for it. A specific example might be regarding payload. If you want to carry more than four tonnes, then a truck dealer should steer you away from a 7.5 tonner, for example. If your driver does not have a licence for a larger truck, then you would have to consider one of the lighter models such as an Isuzu or Fuso with an extra lightweight body.
Many truck dealers are also well versed in helping to export trucks overseas. This means how the vehicles should be prepared for transport, including stacking trailers and loading contailers with additional parts to which tests are required and the all-important paperwork! If you buy through an auction, you will have to look after all of these elements yourself.
