Originally launched back in 2014 but suspended during the pandemic, the HGV levy is due to start once more. The levy is a charge for any truck over 12 tonnes GVW using the UK’s roads and can be paid daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.
Under the revised scheme starting August 1st, Euro 6 trucks will receive discounted rates, whilst older trucks must pay more.
This does mean that trucks registered abroad will make a contribution to the upkeep of the roads even though UK operators are expected to pay it as well – at the same time as the vehicle excise duty (VED).
Whilst the charge is for the use of A roads and motorways, all UK operators will have to pay it, wither annually or every six months. The level paid depends on the gross vehicle weight (gross train weight) of the vehicle concerned.
