As the workhorse of the construction industry, you will always find tonnes of 8×4 tippers for sale on these pages from their owners, truck dealers and available under the hammer in upcoming truck auctions. Often referred to as ‘eight wheel tippers for sale’ or ‘eight leggers’ they confusingly have twelve wheels. On an 8×4 tipper there are two drive axles (with double wheels) and two steer axles. Usually, these steer axles are placed towards the front of the chassis, but a relatively recent invention – the ‘Tridem’ sees two drive axles and a steer axle arranged together at the rear of the truck. It is not just the construction industry that you will find 8×4 tippers, there are plenty in use for waste operation plus other bulk uses, such as beet or grain. For road construction ,the 8×4 tipper will typically be configured in ‘Tarmac’ specification which means that it will have an insulated body with a sheeting system, (Easysheet) to keep the load hot. When buying a used 8×4 tipper always check the operation of the tipping hydraulics, (loaded if possible), the Easy sheet as well as any onboard weighing system.
A car has two axles with a wheel on each corner (4). If it was ether a rear wheel drive or front wheel drive, (not 4WD) in truck talk, this would be a ‘4×2’ – that is to say 4 points of contact with the ground, two of which provide the drive. It is now easy to see where the term 4×4 comes from (4 points of contact, 4 wheels driven).
However, we are interested in an 8-wheeler (or 8-legger), so, a truck with 4 axles has 8 points of contact (for simplicity – I will come back to the 12 wheels later). As many of these tipping trucks work in construction sites, they need to have extra traction, so they drive through both sets of rear axles. This means that there are four driven points of contact. This gives us an 8×4.
There are other options – for truck never venturing onto a building site it is possible to have an 8×2 and very specialist trucks can be 8×6 or even 8×8!
So why the 12 wheels? Well, the two rear, drive axles always have double wheels and tyres fitted. So, there are 8 on the rear and four on the front of a typical eight wheeler!
These trucks are allowed to weigh in at 32,000 kgs gross vehicle weight (including truck, body and load). This compares to 44,000 kgs for an articulated tractor unit (with 3 axles) towing a 3-axle trailer.
Two more new DAF XDC eight wheelers have just joined the Workington specialists in groundworks and plant hire fleet of Phillip Carruthers Ltd. And just like Carruthers’ previous XDC tippers, both are fitted with the same tipping set up. Carruthers acquires its trucks from stock vehicles held by MOTUS Commercials in Carlisle, which in turn looks to L. Townend Ltd of Holmfirth in Yorkshire to fit the chassis with their bodies and HARSH front end (FE) tipping cylinders. The completed tippers are then quickly snapped up by tipper operators across the region. Carruthers’ new 450hp XDCs with their single skin…
