South Gloucestershire Council has taken delivery of seven new Volvo FMX 330 6x4 and two FMX 330 4x4 rigids, each mounted with a snow plough and gritting body. Supplied by Stuart Pearce, EV & Fleet Solutions Manager at Truck and Bus Wales and West, the nine new FMXs join a 45-strong HGV fleet, 15 of which are currently supplied by Volvo Trucks. Mercedes-Benz Trucks has responded to customer feedback by introducing more powerful versions of its 4x4 Unimog UGE implement carrier. Now available for order by UK operators, the U435 and U535 produce 260 kW (354 hp). This represents an increase of 40 kW (54 hp) on the highest output previously available from the Euro VI Step E 7.7-litre in-line six-cylinder engine. Gritters don’t tend to be replaced too often, as they tend to work for a few weeks a year – especially the specialist 4x4 trucks that can’t be as readily repurposed for the (warmer) rest of the year. With the new emissions requirements in London councils are having to change their gritters and so are taking the opportunity to trial something different.
