There are more 32 tonne tippers for sale in the UK than any other type of 32 tonne truck. This is the optimum weight for bulk operation for this four axles (8×4) truck. Even though a tractor unit and tipping trailer may have a greater payload, they are less sure on uneven ground and a lot less safe when tipping as they are more likely to tip over themselves. 32 tonne tippers come with a range of bodies; for extra strength at the expense of payload an operator may choose a steel tipping body or if payload is more important than durability, an aluminium tipping body would be favoured. It is also possible to choose a used insulated 32 tonne tipping truck body which is used in road construction to keep the surfacing materials hot prior to being laid.
Make sure that the body is as light as possible – consider an aluminium body if possible. Lighter alloy wheels help in reducing unsprung weight. Aim for the smallest, lightest day cab available. If there is a choice of engine swept volume for the same power output, always aim for the smaller engine. Use the smallest fuel tank available and fill it with enough fuel for the day’s work.
When a 32 tonne tipper is carrying lose and relatively lightweight cargo, (think waste transfer) then it is important to cover the load with a sheet to prevent the load flying all over the place when driving along. Equally important is for an insulated tipper carrying heated road surfacing, there is no point insulating the sides of the body without effectively putting a lid on the top. In both of these cases, the driver could climb up the vehicle and manually add a sheet over the top. However, these bulk tipping operations are usually time critical and employee health and safety regimes would prefer drivers not to clamber over the back of tall, fully loaded tipper trucks. The ‘Easy Sheet’ system is an automated mechanism for pulling and securing a sheet over the load.
For on-road use, the heaviest permitted rigid tipper truck (that is not pulling a trailer) is 32 tonnes gross vehicle weight. View all 32 tonne tippers for sale here This includes the truck and the payload. Weighing in at over 14 tonnes, these 4-axle ‘8 wheelers’ have payloads of around 18 tonnes. Less popular are tipper trailers (as they are less stable). A tri-axle tipping trailer and 3-axle tractor unit can have a gross train weight of 44 tonnes which easily makes a payload of 28 tonnes+
The market leader for the large end of the tipper truck market is Charlton Bodies. Boweld is another popular manufacturer as is Thompsons. At the lighter end of the market with tipping bodies for 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonners are Tipmaster, Ingimex, VFS and Truckcraft.
There is a trade-off between weight and durability. Use more aluminium for lightness (and better payload) and more, heavier steel for strength and durability. It is possible to have a body built with a combination of both materials adding lightness and strength where suitable.
