Felixstowe-based Multimodal Logistics has added five new T480 High Turbo Compound 6×2 tractor units to its fleet, the first for the container haulage operator. Supplied by Renault Truck Commercials, the T480 High TC was chosen for its driver appeal and fuel-economy capability.

Equipped with Renault Trucks’ latest DE13 TC engine for optimum performance, the T480 Highs have been selected specifically to benchmark performance against a competitor’s model on the 56-strong fleet.

Tim Wray, Managing Director, Multimodal Logistics said: “Our operation has witnessed substantial growth, doubling our fleet size since 2019. After running a competitor’s model during this period, we felt it opportune to explore other brands in the market to ensure that our trucks are delivering optimum performance to our business.”

Turbo Compounding: Increased Torque

The T480 High is working on UK-wide container distribution and where the engine’s Turbo Compound technology comes into its own for optimised fuel efficiency and performance. Renault Trucks’ Turbo Compound engine technology provides increased torque, resulting in improved engine responsiveness and the use of a longer diff ratio (2.31).

For greater fuel savings, Renault Trucks’ Smart Torque Control solution maximises the time spent in the zone with the best engine efficiency, to deliver the required torque when needed.  Additionally, the Optivision Map Based gear shift strategy for FUEL ECO anticipates topography and ECO Cruise control with Optiroll, works to further control fuel consumption.

Driver Appeal

Driver appeal is top priority for Multimodal Logistics, reflected in the inclusion of an air-suspended, heated and ventilated “luxury” driver’s seat, “ultimate” leather steering wheel, microwave, lockers and memory-foam mattress topper. The vehicles have been finished with matching cab paint on the bumper corners, centre, steps and exhaust heat shield.

Tim said: “We selected the T480 High TC for its driver appeal. The drivers are out all week tramping and we wanted a high specification vehicle with all the creature comforts. The T-High cab fits the bill perfectly and provides a roomy working and living space.”

The T480 High TCs have been secured on a 48-month contract, with maintenance carried out by Renault Truck Commercials in Felixstowe. All new vehicles have been supplied with Renault Truck’s Optifleet fleet management system facilitating informed decision-making, reducing operating costs and monitoring real-time performance of both vehicles and drivers.

Tim said: “Renault Trucks’ Optifleet system is easy to use and allows us to monitor driving behaviours and then pinpoint areas for improvement; it gives us all the information and data we need to run a productive fleet.”

He concluded: “The vehicles are hitting their targets and performing well on fuel, achieving in excess of 11mpg, which is in the top end of fuel figures for the fleet. Our initial impressions of the dealership have been excellent too, they are forward-thinking, and customer focused, and we look forward to working with the team.”
