44 tonnes trucks (or 44 tonners) are all three axle tractor units used in combination with three axle semi-trailers.
these are the most common body type of all trucks in the UK – but they hardly exist in the rest of Europe.
The gross vehicle weight of the tractor unit is really 26 tonnes (as it only has three axles) but truck buyers always the gross combined weight (GCW), or gross train weight, (GTW) is 44 tonnes, as the tractor unit is of no use on its own.
The UK is unique across Europe (even before Brexit was even mentioned) as the European standard is 40 tonnes GVW from a two axle tractor unit and trailer.
The axle layout of the semi trailer is usually a standard tri-axle layout with three axles lined up towards the rear of the trailer. The tractor unit could have one drive axle (6×2) or two drive axles (6×4).
For 6×2 tractor units, the non-drive axle will typically be able to lift off the floor when not fully loaded at 44 tonnes. The extra axle should only be lowered if the GTW is greater than 40 tonnes. This saves on tyre wear and fuel costs plus makes the truck slightly easier to manoeuvre.
After three years of operation with a series of used trucks, Tonnes & Tonnes have taken the plunge and splashed out on a limited edition Actros Edition 1. This is understandable, as it will be driven not only by the owner of the business , but also his wife. Newly-qualified Sonara Ferreira must be one of a lucky few to get their hands on a flagship truck so soon after passing their HGV test. It is testament to a solid product and business relationship with the truck dealer when buying a new truck requires almost no deliberation. That’s the case at Wellingborough-based Global Delivery Solutions with their recent acquisition of two Volvo FH500 I-Save ‘Unlimited’ special edition trucks. Global Delivery Solutions has added two new high-spec Volvo FH with I-Save Unlimited Edition trucks to its growing fleet The general haulage firm placed the order after trialling a demonstrator which highlighted the performance of Volvo’s most fuel-efficient tractor unit in the 44-tonne market. “We’ve been running Volvo trucks ever since we’ve been going and we’ve…>
Seems a doddle. Simply order 5 new Volvo FH LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) tractor units, fill up and off you go! It helps if you work next door to a flagship LNG refuelling site, of course. Armstrong Logistics are in this fortunate situation, which means that they can use these co2-saving trucks without any significant additional infrastructure costs. The 6x2 gas tractor units join five more conventional diesel Volvo FH 500 Globetrotter XL trucks Setting up an LNG refuelling point on site is not something many businesses will entertain at this point. With bases at Hinckley, Lutterworth and Doncaster, Armstrong…>
“Had a good day in the office?” “Yes, thank you, I’ve just taken Scania's largest ever European order for civilian trucks.” This is the sixth time Eddie Stobart Limited and its associated companies have placed a major order with Scania We can only guess the scene, but an order for a minimum of 2,250 Scanias must have made someone’s day. The order was won from Consortium Purchasing. This is an operation led by William Stobart, Executive Chairman of GreenWhiteStar Acquisitions, which owns Eddie Stobart, The Pallet Network, iForce etc., and Allan Jenkinson, owner of A. W. Jenkinson Forest Products.…>
You know a truck has performed well if it gets to 1,000,000 kilometres and the operator just goes to the dealer to buy a new one. No fuss, no shopping around, no back to back demonstrator trials – just go and buy a new one. Operating from the firm’s headquarters in Bolton it will be on the road five days per week That’s what metal component manufacturer and supplier, Folsana Pressed Sections, has done. They have replaced their 15 year old Volvo FM12 that has been on its fleet for 15 years, covering nearly 1,000,000 km with a new Volvo…>
