Although Truckpages is a specialist truck website, we still get plenty of listings for used 3.5 tonne vans for sale. Think Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter.
These are the biggest vans you can buy and still drive them on a car licence without the need for a truck operators licence and all the extra paperwork that requires.
These vans need no tachographs, no special driver’s licence, no operator’s licence, no compulsory 6 week inspections, no driver’s hours restrictions etc.
This means that this type of commercial vehicle is increasing in popularity.
It certainly does not mean that the van can carry 3.5 tonnes! That is the maximum allowed weight of the vehicle including payload.
So the amount you can carry depends on the make of van, the length and the height.
Buy a long wheel base, high roof 3.5 tonne van and you may find that you can carry less than a tonne. The shorter the wheelbase and lower the roof, the bigger the payload as a rule.
There are lighter vans – the medium class (think Transit Custom) goes up to around 2.6 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)

If you are looking for a tipper or a dropside that’s the size of a van but built more like a truck then you need to follow Anwen Construction's route and consider buying a 3.5 tonne Fuso Canter. The company already runs two tippers – one a ‘proper’ 7.5 tonner and the other a van-based 35. Tonne GVW tipper.
