East Kent Recycling has added 23 Volvo trucks to its fleet, incorporating a range of models to support varied operational demands. The delivery includes 10 FL 4×2 and eight FE 4×2 skiploaders, four FMX 8×4 hookloaders, and one FMX 6×2 tractor unit. These vehicles will be deployed across construction, demolition, and waste transport activities, operating primarily from the company’s Dover-based depot.
Powertrain and Transmission Details
The FL and FE skiploaders are equipped with DK8 engines, delivering 280 hp and 350 hp respectively. The FE models feature Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift transmission, designed to enable rapid gear changes and smooth acceleration. The FMX hookloaders are fitted with Hiab Multilift bodywork and powered by D13K engines, split between 420 hp and 460 hp configurations. The FMX tractor unit is paired with a 540 hp engine and also benefits from the I-Shift transmission.

Skiploader Modification and Regulatory Approval
A notable feature of the new skiploaders is their ability to legally double-stack full skips. This capability was achieved through a modification involving cross chains between the skip arms on the Boughton bodywork. The system has received formal approval from both the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)—a first in the UK. The modification is expected to reduce fuel consumption and improve turnaround times by enabling fewer journeys.
Maintenance and Usage Expectations
All vehicles are covered under a five-year Volvo Gold Contract, which includes preventive maintenance and repairs. Each truck is expected to operate five days a week, covering between 60,000 to 80,000 kilometres annually, depending on workload.
