The ‘tuck away’ or ‘underslung’ tail lift has been growing in popularity in the UK in recent years. Traditionally we have been a ‘column’ tail lift market, but the benefits of a tail lift that folds away under the chassis out of sight is being appreciated by an increasing number of truck operators. If a truck loads from a loading bay but needs the tail lift to unload , then a tuck away tail lift is the best option, as it will not get damaged when reversing onto the bay and, unlike a column lift, will not have to operated to be moved out of the way to assist loading. In all likelihood, we will soon see many more tuck away or ‘tuck under’ tail lifts than their column siblings in the years to come.
The easiest way to explain about the tail lift is to show a couple of examples. The first image shows the tail lift in the lowered position where it is very flat and needs no additional ramps for loading. Note that it is difficult to add additional personnel safety rails on this type of lift.
This second image shows the lift in the closed position – not the access to the barn doors is not impeded at all. In fact, the lift operates totally independently of the body. This makes loading with a forklift or loading bay much easier than with other types of tail lifts.
