The Volvo FM380 remains a popular truck for sale at Truckpages. The 380hp FM380 was sold in the early part of the 2000's and was usually configured as an 8-wheel tipper. The same 380hp output was available from both the nine and twelve litre Volvo engines - operators could opt for the extra torque or the lighter weight of the smaller engine. there is a newer, Euro 6 version of the FM380, but this has yet to make its way onto the used truck market in any great numbers.
The Volvo FM400 was the go to variant of the FM range for 8 wheeler operation from 2006 to 2010. This means there are plenty of FM400 trucks for sale in the UK used truck market. The trucks are well suited for the export market and there are some that appear as (low powered) tractor units. This was the higher powered options, as truck buyers could also specify their 8x2 or 8x4 Volvo rigid as a 380hp at this time. the FM400 was replaced by the FM410 which itself has been replaced by the FM420.
The FM420 is often confused by truck buyers and sellers into looking for the FM13.420 which was a truck that was never built. Before Volvo changed from the 12-litre engine that powered the FM12 range to the 13-litre that powers the current range, it changed the model numbering system. This means that around 2005/6, the ’12’ part of the number (the engine’s swept volume) was removed leaving the cab type (FM – Forward control – Medium) and the horsepower (in the case of this variant 420hp). So if you are looking for an FM13.420 then you are on the correct pages!

Often called the FM11.450 - although not by us or Volvo, many truck dealers and buyers carried on with the naming convention of adding the engine size to the model name. The FM450 is used either as a standard everyday workhorse tractor unit or as a multi-axle rigid - an 8x4 hookloader, for example. Available in the UK from 2011, the model continues through Euro 6 and is available alongside the FM460
The Volvo FM460 is part of the FM range of trucks from Volvo. The current models are fitted with Volvo's Euro 6, D11K engines which produce 460 hp (hence the FM460 name) and a top torque of 2,220 Nm. Typically these models are used as tractor units or heavy duty 8x4 applications, such as machinery carriers and can be fitted with a heavy-duty front axle. For every day 8x4 tipper operation you are more likely to see the FM400 or later FM410 on the road - or for heavy duty tipping jobs, truck buyers will typically opt for one of the Volvo FMX range of trucks.
The Volvo FM is the most common Volvo beavertail truck available in the UK's used truck market. This shows that if a plant operator wants a heavier beavertail then they'll choose a premium brand - for lighter work, the other Volvo models (FE and FL) do not perform as well as the FM. These plant-bodies Volvo FM trucks are available as 6x2, 26 tonne versions or the more popular, top weight 32 tonne 8x2 and 8x4 variants. Expect to see the largest FM beavertails fitted with cranes to the rear of the cab and nine tonne front axles. Later examples can be seen in 'Tridem' configuration where there...
As far as the market for tipping trucks in the UK is concerned, the Volvo FM Tipper stands alongside Scania's P Series as the most common second hand tipper available in the used truck market. Volvo Truck's reliability and the ruggedness of the base FM version means that many operators do not need to take advantage of the 'construction' version of the FM - the Volvo FMX. Expect to see nearly all of the FM Tippers for sale at 320 tonnes GVW with 8x4 axle configuration and thee sweet spot of power output sitting around the 400hp mark. Plenty of the older versions of the FM tipper will be...
