The trucks on these pages are all 18 tonners – that is to say 4×2 rigids with a variety of body types. 18,000kgs (18 tonnes) is the maximum gross vehicle weight possible using a two-axle truck. This is because the rear, drive axle can take a maximum of 10 tonnes and the front, steer axle 8 tonnes. For operators requiring greater payloads from a rigid truck can increase this through the addition of an extra axle, (giving a 6×2 configuration) which can add a further 8 tonnes payload. Operating at less than 26 and more than 18 tonnes GVW is less efficient, so trucks running at 22 tonnes, for example, are very rare.
